We do not usually remember them by numbers. We remember Udarata Menike, Ruhunu Kumari, Yal Devi, Podi Menike... names that have become almost inseparable from the journeys themselves. But this tradition did not begin with the railway. When the railway was introduced to Ceylon in the mid-19th century, trains were largely identified by their routes and timetables. It was only decades later, particularly with the development of express services in the 1950s, that trains began to acquire identities of their own. The first female-named express was Ruhunu Kumari, introduced in 1955 on the Colombo–Matara route. The name, meaning the Princess of Ruhuna, tied the train to the southern region. Soon came Yal Devi, associated with Jaffna and the North, and Udarata Menike, the Upcountry Maiden, taking its identity into the hill country. The names were more than convenient labels. They gave each service a sense of place... linking the train to the geography and cultural character of the region it served. In that sense, they functioned almost like an early form of audio branding: hear the name, and you immediately had an idea of the journey. There was also a cultural dimension to the choice. In Sri Lankan tradition, women have often been associated with grace, endurance, care and rhythm... qualities that could easily be imagined in a train that crosses long distances, climbs mountains and carries countless lives each day. Interestingly, male names were not absent from the railway. Steam locomotives were named after figures such as British governors, carrying associations of authority and power. Passenger expresses, however, developed a distinctly different personality. And perhaps that is the most remarkable part. The railway did not simply give these trains names. It gave them personalities... and turned ordinary journeys into something people could remember. #srilankan #srilankatravel #srilankan_tik_tok #visitsrilanka #lostceylondiaries
