Awesome #repost from @andybryant_podiatrist 👏🏼 Going barefoot or in minimalist shoes for training and for general life is the ultimate functional foot exercise. We don’t want this movement when lifting and we can help avoid it by wearing a wide, flat, flexible and thin soled shoe when lifting. The ground is the ultimate stable surface for our body to react with. So why do we wear shoes with a layer of cushioning between us and the ground for so many of our physical pursuits and for general life activities? When we use our feet naturally, their function starts off a chain reaction of function throughout our body. When we use a cushioned and heeled modern athletic shoe it’s akin to wearing a blindfold to protect our eyes from the sun rather than sunglasses. When moving (not just lifting) we should be using mobility to adapt to the ground as we land and then as we take off we should be pushing the ground away through naturally ‘on’ feet. When jumping, turning or pivoting we should be using the natural spring found in the structures in our foot and around our ankle. When our ankles wobble around like in these examples, we might start to see overuse injuries. Part of why they are wriggling around like this is because of the soft cushioning in the shoe creating instability for the foot. Going barefoot or in minimalist shoes for training and for general life is the ultimate functional foot exercise. If we should wear a shoe, it needs to be wide, thin soled, flat and flexible and fixed to our foot.
