Get bedside experience, people. Even two years is too short. Build expertise. The choice to shorten the route is always visible in the provider’s impact. Don’t shorten the route. It takes at least five years to even be competent at nursing. Don’t rush.

I’m only an RN but I’ve been inpatient psych for 8 years now and I think that I’m exponentially more well honed in than I was 2 years in. Milieu observations and picking up on the more subtle aspects of psych come with time and experience.

I agree. I don't think you have to have specific inpatient experience to by a Psych NP, but I think having Psych Experience in general is invaluable. Psych remains a specialty for a reason. You would be a stronger NP if you had experience with every age level and different care levels offered in the mental health field.

My thoughts as well!!! Some many people try to hold nurses back, whether it be other nurses or lay people. Like go get the training you really want and leave other people alone!
