In the 90s and early 2000s, the school board in Baton Rouge allowed senior level students to go to their teachers and personally ask for a grade change from a failing grade in order for them to graduate. I refused to change a failing grade because I lnew I had done everything possible for that student to pass. I even told a student who had innumerable absences that I could not in good faith change his grade because he had not learned one thing that school year. His parent turned me in to my curriculum administrator and I was told to never say that to a student ever again.

As a teacher I never assume. Because as a mother, I have a child who this year alone has missed 20 days of school due to health issues. Having appointments and testing done consistently to ensure she is okay and still on the right track. Communication on both parties is key.
