@the.budget.academy: Life threw me something I didn't see coming and my emergency fund was the only thing that kept me from losing everything. I am starting over again and I am rebuilding all over again. #savingtips #PersonalFinance #startingover #emergencyfund #budgetingtips
Yes! You have to stay ready. I started my emergency fund in 2017. By 2019 I built it up to a good amount, but then got a new horrible boss who threatened to fire me every chance he got. Immediately started beefing up my emergency fund and job hunting. Unfortunately Covid hit and I lost my job anyway. I told myself I never wanted to be in that position ever again. Thankfully my husband was employed and I collected unemployment. I saved ALL of that money and we lived off his income while others were balling off of that unemployment. I went back to work part time 18 months later and still kept building. Been working full time 3 years now and have a fully funded emergency fund. In this economy, I’m still adding to it bc it’s just too unstable and risky not to.

I achieved a year emergency (living expenses) fund and a $10k household fund earlier this year. Currently working on a car replacement fund as well as a fun/vacation fund. Also working on building a 2nd year emergency fund but building it $25-50 a week at a time. Will take awhile but building it.

One year of expenses plus more in case of medical expenses or anything else that can happen to you while you don’t have an income

This reminds me of that video I watched last fall where someone said emergencies never happen. Man I was flabbergasted. Emergency funds are 100% necessary

In 2013, I was in a car accident that forced me out of work for 91 days (the maximum my company allowed). I had no disability insurance, so I had to pay out of savings. I was fortunate because I had enough saved to pay all my bills without the stress of “I have to go back to work” or take on debt. Life happens, regardless of how well you plan. I agree it’s better to be prepared for rain, even when it’s sunny…. I’m glad you were able to get through your situation

I know everyone's situation is different and our bills are different but would you mind sharing how much was your emergency fund to get an idea of where I should aim cause I'm kinda clueless 🙈

Very true! I’ve listen to Suze Orman since my teens and she gets such a bad wrap for a 1-2 yr emergency fund and look at how many people used it when COVID hit! Not your case but still the same, thankfully you had $$ saved.

This is a great post on the importance of having an emergency fund. I teach about this to teens in one of my books on Financial Literacy so that they can build good financial habits before they are exposed to bad ones. I also have another book on Career Planning for Teens to walk them through their career choices. This year I want reach as many parents, grandparents, family members, teachers, and mentors of teens to help with Financial Literacy and Career Planning. My goal is to help the next generation not have the struggles we did at that age.
