@alexander_dahlgren_jawad: There is an entire industry designed to sell you a trend instead of asking who you are. Following trends is the lazy answer — for the designer, not for you. If every client gets the same white oak kitchen, the same intentional spaces, the same elevated simplicity, nobody had to do any real work. Real interior design starts with questions. A lot of them. Why is the air fryer in the garage? Why are your clothes packed like sardines? How do you wish you could start and end each day? The answers to those questions are what make a home yours. For new homes and house plans, function comes before finishes — every time. Inspired homes are not decorated. Inspired homes are understood. 47 years of residential interior design. No trends. No shortcuts. Just better decisions for your home. #newhomes #homedesignvideo #floorplans #houseplans #interiortrends
this was actually illuminating. I thought what, off the top of my head, could I show in my home that I love and I came up blank. I don't know that I love anything in my house.

I’m so happy with my architect. He was old school, he has no internet presence, no website, he shared his office with a lawyer, spent the in person meeting with pencil and ruler. No Pinterest, no trends talk, just a man and his craft. Homework was make a list of the challenges we had in the design of our first home. He said “looks like you had a storage problem and a lighting problem.” He designed a house with ample storage and windows galore!

I designed custom homes. And he’s absolutely right about this. What we have been doing for a long time as we send out a 32 page questionnaire so we get to understand them individually. We are designing a custom home for them usually for the rest of their life or even further like a legacy home. The trends at the moment don’t matter. What matters is what makes them feel comfortable in their home in represents and reflects their feelings and their life.

You Sir, I am sure are worth every penny. My wife April handled all these things and I was the muscle and carpenter to help bring her ideas to life. I was blessed. My April passed from breast cancer a few yrs ago and I cannot, yet, change her last decorating ideas. I’m sure at some point I will. I appreciate your videos, respectfulness and honesty.

The air fryer is in the garage so my house doesn't smell like a Wendy's.

Because they want their work to also be pinned so they’ll take a trend angle to make their business viral

Architect here 🙋♀️, you captured it perfectly - I see things in black and white, in wireframe. I’ve never been able to explain it, but I can spend enormous amounts of time in spaces and not catch the decorative theme

I had a designer completely ignore everything we said we needed and wanted in a kitchen. Horrible experience

This is great advice! I made quite a few Pinterest boards before we moved to our current home, and I haven’t really utilized them. We have repurposed rooms to fit our needs (a weirdly located dining room is now an office/playroom for grandkids, and our “breakfast nook” is the main dining area. I’m choosing furniture and finishes that make me happy, fit my budget, and allow me to relax and enjoy my family without fussing.

I wish my architect husband had someone like you as a mentor 😭 you sound like him in the future with the things that frustrate him and his aims. And he has the added passion of designing houses and spaces for people with varied disabilities

Omg; THANK YOU! Professional Organizer here and you are the kind of designer I like to work with; so many care only about the magazine pic, not function!

This is the type of process I’d love to have if I was hiring a designer although I do ask myself those questions already.

Totally tangentially, Pinterest is the original rage bait. I setup AdGuard with one absolute, non-negotiable rule: block everything Pinterest.

Our regional office turned into a Pinterest board... They never asked the in house design team about anything other than the exterior during the full tear down and rebuild. Now it transitions design philosophy every 15 feet.
Luckily, my office is in the 15 foot stretch of Bauhaus.

We’re currently doing a full renovation, one room at a time. I have an unhealthy addiction to stained glass, whether it’s used in windows, lighting, or decor. How much is too much?
