Lord of the Rings is the cornerstone of fantasy but I think it also gets overlooked as a post-apocalyptic story as well. The world of middle earth is OLD, the magic of the world is well past due, elves are actively abandoning the world, the dwarves are a stagnant and fading culture, and humans are essentially living in the ruins of dead civilizations, with only a few million of them hanging in there. It’s so fascinating to me.
