i would take mankey or either of the nidorans over butterfree any day neither of broks pokemon are a real offensive threat so wouldn't be able to out damage any of them and they would all be much better options through the entire game butterfree is usable past brock but is outclassed by so many pokemon you have access to after brok there is no reason to keep it on your team unless you really just want to

gen 1 is definitely mankey with low kick for me. totally makes Brock a joke and is a great fighting type for the rest of the game.

Technically first route only have rattata Sentrent, Pidgey and hoot hoot at night. You slipped them to get bellsprout on the 3 rd route before the first gym lol

I always got Caterpie and Pidgey. Pidgey is very useful to blind them with sand attack
