@freerangepigeon: Break the rules but break them good, okay? #art #contemporaryart #film Works for further reading (or hating) American Landscape, Elizabeth Gilbert Jerome Altarpiece of the Passion, Master of the Passion at the Carnation of Baden Super 8, J.J. Abrams and Stephen Spielberg
I was surprised when you said “it’s not from a piece of art, it’s from a movie”, I was under the assumption that movies were included when we were taking about art, am I wrong?

There’s a saying in the graphic design world that some of the best design goes unnoticed. Not because it isn’t good, but because it follows the rules that allow people to take it in so effortlessly they might not even realize they’re doing it. When a rule isn’t followed, but the designer isn’t intentionally breaking the rule, it’s often uncomfortable in some way that does a disservice to the intent of the piece.

in comedy there's a theory called "yes and", and something folks don't realize is "no, but" is a valid form of "yes and".

You really got me to look at contemporary art in a whole new light. I still wonder though, what do you think is the reason for contemporary art containing a lot less pieces that are just awe inspiring to observe at first glance, in the same way modern art has impressionism and surrealism. Is the demand just not there, is it made and are we just not seeing it or are artist just less interested in it?

Yeah it’s like when a character in a movie has to play an instrument or sing badly. You usually find out the actor is an expert on that instrument. It takes skill to play badly.

This reminds me of the Domingo sketch on SNL. Famous singers guest as bridesmaids, singing about Domingo poorly. It's really hard to sing badly when you are a good singer!
