I wish I could still pin comments, but I noticed some people are hung up when I say that the demons “have an understanding of morality.” Yes, in the manga, they can’t comprehend feelings of malice or guilt, but they are clearly intelligent enough to manipulate a highly intelligent concept like morality to their benefit. One of the demons can even reflect and say that Frieren described them perfectly?? That level of intelligence suggests CLEARLY they have some concept of morality even if they cannot feel it themselves. That is where the moral dilemma comes in, much like with the orcs in LOTR. Will probably need to make another video tbh.

Is that why Dungeon Meshi doesn't suffer from that? (It's the only anime I know that has a similar fantasy world, but its cast of characters is much more varied)

Idk why i never realized this but thank you for making a vid about it- i also want to add that generally the demons of frieren having no nuance to themselves makes it so uninteresting for their story bc it would mean that they just exist to be obstacles or xp farms for frieren and fern to aura farm which tbh is really dumb- i like how in demon slayer and nimona where the mcs have to conquer the concept of sympathy and being able to put yourself in ppl’s shoes and realizing they could have been saved or even can’t be helped- it helps them progress as characters but in frieren they have no value like that

I don’t think people understand that we aren’t questions how Frieren herself reacts the situations. We are questioning the writing of the demons as a whole.

I think Frieren's take on the demons lacks some of that nuance but the core of the show is so focused on Frieren and her group rather than the fantasy, so I think there is some trade off. Im not really watching Frieren to see them fight demons, and the show well establishes that this isn't about the grand journey to defeat the Big Bad^ demon King. I think the demons serve a more narrative purpose. They're evil, yes, but they also help put human life into perspective in a way that's really unique for the story being told. Is there room for nuance? maybe, but I don't think it's always necessary. I would like to see more diversity in the cast though.

I think it's a double edged sword. Each of these stories needed villains, so you can either make them redeemable or not. If you make them redeemable, then you have to admit that even the worst people alive can be saved; and if you make them irredeemable, you run the risk of creating literary bias in your own work. And if you make morality malleable to put everyone at the same level, then do you even have heroes and villains anymore?

I'm a full believer that all stories are made for a reaction to aspect of society whether intentioned or not, you cannot make a writing without society or the reflections of a human experience because of society. the author is free to write as they please but they must care deeply for their work for they will be responsible for the ripples it creates. when you write a story; you must be fully aware that once you publish it, its no longer yours
