Leonardo da Vinci painted The Last Supper between 1495 and 1498 on the wall of a Milan monastery dining room. Most of what you see today is not his paint. The five hidden details in this carousel: One. Judas knocked over the saltcellar. Spilled salt in Renaissance painting meant betrayal and broken trust. The omen is happening in real time as Jesus names the traitor. Two. The twelve apostles are arranged in four groups of three. Three was the sacred number of the Trinity, and Leonardo built the entire composition around it. Each cluster reacts to the same moment differently. Three. Jesus and Judas are reaching for the same bread. In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus says the betrayer will be the one who shares his dish. Leonardo painted the second of prophecy fulfilling itself. Four. Leonardo painted in oil on dry plaster instead of true fresco. By 1556, sixty years after he finished, witnesses said the painting was already ruined. It has been restored at least seven times. Most of what survives is later painters’ best guesses at what he originally painted. Five. In 1652, monks at the monastery cut a doorway through the lower wall of the painting. They wanted a shortcut into the kitchen. The wound removed Christ’s feet and is still visible today. Nobody put the feet back. The painting hangs at Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan. You need a reservation to see it. They only let 25 people in at a time. It is mostly ghost. And mostly Leonardo anyway. Save this for your next visit to Santa Maria delle Grazie. 📍 Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan #arthistory #thelastsupper #leonardodavinci #renaissance #arthistorytiktok
