I'm gonna be a little curmudgeonly here: it was more intriguing and magical before there were a bunch of Harry Potter themed shops there. It was more like all the traditional shops were imbued with a secret magic, like they were trying to hide it but it kept leaking out through the cracks in the masonry. Now it's a bit crass, they're trying too hard.

but it's not diagon alley and it doesn't need little Harry potter shops. The Shambles used to be a lovely old street full of quirky tasteful shops

The Wizard Walk of York :
