He used his uncle's theories of the unconscious to reshape what millions of people believed, ate, smoked, and voted for. In October 1924, three weeks before the election, Coolidge had a problem. Alice Roosevelt Longworth — Teddy Roosevelt's daughter, wife of the House Speaker, and Washington's most feared wit — had destroyed him with a single line: he "looks as though he was weaned on a pickle." Bernays' fix was elegant. No press briefings. No spin. Just Al Jolson, the Dolly Sisters, and a dozen Broadway stars eating pancakes at the White House. Then he stepped back and let every newspaper in America write the story themselves. Coolidge "permitted himself to be mildly convulsed" laughing at a Jolson joke about two frogs and a turtle. Jolson even debuted a song he'd written for the occasion: "Keep Coolidge." Every one of America's 2,000 daily papers ran it front page. Coolidge won the 1924 election with 54% of the popular vote — the largest margin of the twentieth century to that point. What Bernays pioneered here wasn't spin. It was the manufactured news event: don't tell the press what to think — create a situation where they can only write one story. Every political consultant on earth uses this today. His book was later used by Goebbels as a basis for Nazi propaganda. Bernays — who was Jewish — found this out in 1933.
