Key Features and Geography The river is traditionally divided into three distinct sections: Upper Zambezi: Originates from a marshy wetland in northwestern Zambia near the border of Angola and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It flows through vast floodplains, such as the Barotse Plain, where seasonal rains cause the river to expand up to 25 kilometres in width. Middle Zambezi: Begins at the world-famous Victoria Falls (Mosi-oa-Tunya), which drops 108 metres into the Batoka Gorge. This section is heavily modified by human infrastructure, most notably the Kariba Dam, which created Lake Kariba—one of the world's largest man-made lakes. Lower Zambezi: Starts below the Cahora Bassa Dam in Mozambique, where the river broadens into a massive delta before discharging into the Indian Ocean
