We have already gotten evidence that Subaru can have his memories wiped all the way up to the point to which he left the grocery store. This could mean that in five years, 30 years, 400 years, Subaru could have his memories wiped and he could think that he just walked out of the grocery store. This makes me think that the beginning of the show is actually the end of Flugel's journey.

I'm thinking Flugel is actually Subaru but from a much more later existence,he died and moved on to his real world reborn to take a break but promised to probably return when the re:zero universe is in danger,so he basically called upon himself once more,no memories,no powers,no nothing,you can almost say he's starting from.....zero....it explains why Shaula also has Subaru's color scheme since Flugel (old Subaru) probably teaches her a few of his styles and she took over

Craziest theory i read was that Flugel is actually Subaru's sins that got stripped of him while he was transported. They were sent 400 years ago where he lived a classic isekai story life until tragedy struck and the sins were spread to the world. Except for the original sin Envy which stuck with Subaru. And that to be "human" once more Subaru would need to collect his sins again.
