And this is why I will never register my well bred Labradors with the AKC until they stop requiring this barbaric practice. They’ll never get a dime from me again until this changes. As a veterinarian in this country it makes me furious.

Id day it also depends on the dog and the lifestyle the dog lives. Some working dogs that are actually working i can understand due to risks of injury to floppy ears and stuff like that, but just for looks? nope

Cropping and docking should only be for medical reasons or for very select working dogs (note not breeds, individual dogs who actually work in environments that can cause harm to long tails or floppy ears)

akc has standerds yes BUT rhey also abide by states. your state it may be illegal so they wont do crop or dock where u are were i am they automatically do both

I think it should be illegal to NOT crop/dock if it's in the AMERICAN standard (aka the only acceptable one.) I won't even ADOPT a non cropped/docked dog if it's in their breed standard

I consider crop/dock only if there are reasons. if you have a working line used in work, crop/dock as needed. dog from a pedigree prone to happy tail? dock. medical issues in ears? crop. medical issues in tail? dock.

I wouldn’t own a dog that didn’t have a cropped tail/ears if that was the standard. Just pick a different breed.

I cropped my Doberman’s ears purely for cosmetic reasons. I did my research on the procedure and was sent home with more than enough pain meds to manage pain. I do recognize that is a selfish and unnecessary procedure and even came close to canceling her appointment a couple times, but at the end of the day I spent my money on my dream dog and wanted her to look a certain way. Looking back, I have no regrets. She did not show any signs of pain at all during the healing process and was right back to her normal happy self as soon as the anesthesia wore off. It did not affect her physically or mentally as much as I thought it would.

So someone who has zero experience with cropped breeds is here to tell me it causes harm? well hey. I do have some experience and it doesn't. they can still use them just like any other dog. the recovery is a breeze. it's healed in no time. puppies go right back to living normally. Animal rights people have the loudest opinions and none of the knowledge. that's why it's illegal in many countries. thankfully us here in the states still have a choice to choose. But if you want the slivers of ear I can 100% send you some in the future.

I only believe in cropping ears/ docking tails for medical reasons or for military dogs. Chronic ear infections, recurring hematomas or happy tail, or for military dogs who would be put in extra danger by having extremeties to grab, are the only valid reasons to do these things to a dog. I also feel that there is never a valid reason to declaw a cat, as it is insanely cruel to them.

I’ve seen cattle dogs get their tails broke when working cattle. If a breed is doing something that can risk getting injured I’d say allow it. Theyre under anesthesia for the surgery and get pain meds just like spay and neuter. I’d like to point out a lot of countries ban things they deem abuse bcs they don’t want to learn the pros and cons of it. Like crates, a lot of countries have allegedly banned crates bcs they can be abusive, it doesn’t mean they are tho
