@jake.pnw: You Have to See This‼️😱 Oregon scallop fossils are proof that our coastline used to be covered by ancient seafloors, and some of these shell beds are millions of years old in formations like the Astoria Formation. Scallops might look nothing like an octopus, but they’re actually distant relatives because both are mollusks. Scallops are bivalves, while octopuses are cephalopods. Same major animal group, totally different body plan. Even crazier, scallops aren’t just simple shells. Living scallops can have rows of tiny blue eyes along the edge of their mantle, while octopuses went all-in on advanced eyes, big brains, and no external shell at all. So when you find an Oregon scallop fossil, you’re looking at part of the same giant family tree that also gave us octopuses. ##nature##animals##learning##education
