@meghannmcuniff: A lawyer for the parents of a teen girl killed when a Los Angeles police officer fired three rounds in a clothing store ended his examination of the lead officer by questioning him about body-camera footage in which he yells "slow down." Jurors in the civil trial saw the footage as Nick Rowley tried to question Michael Mazur about what happened but was stopped by Judge Frank Tavelman. Mazur and other officers were searching a Burlington Coat Factory in North Hollywood for a pantless man assaulting a woman with a bicycle lock on Dec. 23, 2021, when Officer William Dorsey Jones Jr. fired three rounds from his AR-15, killing the assailant and 14-year-old Valentina Orellana-Peralta, who was in a dressing room with her mother trying on dresses for her quinceañera. The girl's parents are suing Jones, the City of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Police Department for negligence and wrongful death, and a jury trial is underway in the Los Angeles County Superior Court branch courthouse in Burbank. Video from police body-worn cameras shows shoppers in the store as the officers charged through the store. When questioning Mazur, Rowley pointed out that he saw a woman just before he yelled at Jones, "Slow down! Slow it down!" Rowley played the footage of the gunfire and an officer glumly stating, "Alright. Shots fired," then asked, "Are you familiar with the training, 'Move only as fast as you can make sound decisions'?" "Yes, sir," Mazur answered. "And you're saying 'slow down' over and over again, screaming Jones — his name — correct?" Rowley asked."Correct," Mazur answered. "You told the team specifically 'slow down,' emphatically, several times, true?" Rowley asked. "That's been asked and answered repeatedly. Can we move on please?" Judge Tavelman said. "When you got there to the scene and you learned that this was one suspect, no pants with a bike lock, you were working to deescalate the situation, correct?" Rowley asked. "Objection, asked and answered, Your Honor," said Christian Richard Bojorquez of the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office."It's going to be vague as to time. When initially got there at the top of the escalator?" the judge said. Rowley ended the exam. "I appreciate your time. Those are all the questions I have. Thank you, sir," he told Mazur. Bojorquez will continue questioning Mazur when the trial resumes on Tuesday (April 21).
