Except, if you plant short, quick maturing, shade tolerant crops like these: Arugula - Lettuce Cilantro Spinach Radishes Carrots Bunching Onions Marigolds This method is called "underplanting". I plant these short crops at least 12" inches away from my cabbage seedlings to ensure that they get access to sunlight to germinate and grow big.
