Story time: while in the military, I had a coworker who was 2 years younger than myself. When he joined our unit, I had more stripes (rank) than he had. He and I got along great, he had good energy about him. He was married with 1 child. Fast forward 10 years later, he surpassed me in rank and I thought “what I am doing wrong?” If anyone knows anything about the military, IT IS EXTREMELY COMPETITIVE especially when it comes to making rank. I kept asking myself, what am I doing wrong? Now mind you I put my schooling above everything else, so I already had my MBA by my 11th year mark. Plot twist: well I found out this dude and his wife had 9 KIDS! YES 9 KIDS. Once I realized this, I said to myself “he needs that rank, they need the money.” And thats when I realized no matter what rank I had, I would always have more $$$, bcuz my money came to me. I was dividing it up to feed a family of 11. I stopped comparing myself to others at that point. Whats mine is mine, and whats theirs is theirs.
