Revan didn’t create Nihilus. Meetra Surik did. Oh sure, Revan ordered the use of the Mass Shadow Generator at Malachor V, but Meetra is the one who turned it on. As a result, she instinctively cut herself off from the Force. Or at least she thought she did. What she actually did was to create a rift in the Force through her connection. This allowed her to feed of the Force of other people. Nihilus learned of this ability and did it deliberately, creating in himself not just a rift in the Force, but turning himself into an actual void. He became the equivalent of a Black Hole for Force energy, sucking up the life of everyone and everything around him.
