Margaret (Taylor’s Version) :
as a freshman here are my experiences so far @ a liberal arts college: 1) no one cares about the bathroom. just discretely get up & go. i try to go before or after to not miss anything, but just go if u need to - don’t ask. 2) attendance being mandatory depends on the class/professor & they’ll say in the syllabus. but even if it’s not mandatory, still go unless ur sick or have a real conflict cause like he said, u are the one paying to be there - don’t waste it. 3) there’s not really a “nurse’s office” just a health center (that’s by appointment usually). u have free will to do what u want so u can skip to nap, but again u are paying for the class. nap some other time since the schedule is not like high school - ur pretty much never in class a full 8 hours/day straight. but also yes if ur like really sick, don’t go to class. allergies or just a common seasonal cold imo are fine but like the flu or covid or something else, no. 4) professors at my college seem to love their jobs & i haven’t met anyone too old (like past normal retirement age). in fact they probably want u to talk to them about their work (research, job, etc). 5) i’ve not been locked out of class once & i’ve been late enough to have tested this out (not proud of that). but it varies between professors. 6) u’ll only get an F if u deserve an F (aka cheated/plagiarized, used AI - we have an honor code that restricts generative AI on assignments, or just genuinely did bad on the paper). 7) late work policies vary. i have 1 class that accepts reasonably late work for less points, 1 that gives 3 free late passes to turn in at any point in the semester w/ no penalty (but after the three it’s a zero) & if u don’t use any of them u get bonus points on hw, 1 w/ 2 dropped hws (something we didn’t do or didn’t get above 50% on), 1 that grants a 1-time free late pass w/ no penalty, & 1 that has online work that automatically docks 5% per question each day after the due date, giving like 20 days to complete it. even then it can be negotiated if you respectfully reach out to the professor about it (if they still say no, move on).
