@ava.langridge: grab driver in Kuta, Lombok asked me: “where were you before?” i answer, without questioning what it means to him: “the gili islands.” i follow up, and don’t second guess my ask: “have you ever been?” without hesitation: “no. we don’t leave kuta.” i’ve heard about people never taking planes, and leaving their country. but this was new. not leaving within a 30km radius? with more grab rides, i became more and more intrigued. intrigued to understand if this was a unique scenario, or a shared experience. and what do you think? every grab driver answered the same. i’ve not been to “the gili islands, or nusa peninda, or really outside of where i’m from” i ask, cautiously: why? simply because i knew they had a car (as a grab driver), so they could get around. the answer always fell along the lines of: “i want to go beyond here. i want to see my country. i want to travel internationally. actually, london sounds amazing. but it’s just too expensive. the cost of petrol, accommodation, boats. and i can’t afford to take a day off work. what if my kid needs to go to the hospital? i need to make sure that money is saved up” that contextualised the world more than ever. this explains the stat we hear so often of how 80% of the world never gets on a flight. my whole life, i’ve been surrounded by “i traveled here” or “i went there”. never truly exposed to what it’s like to not have the choice to travel, even if the desire is there. let this be a reminder, that if you have ever traveled, you hold substantial privilege, likely geographical privilege. #travel #lombok #indonesia

When i was in bali, we asked our driver to bring us to a restaurant. He brought us tk this popular duck restaurant (bebek joni) and told us alot of his passengers ate here. I invited him in to join us then he told us its his first time eating there despite being there multiple times

Had a similar experience in Laos. Our driver didn't see his brother in months because he worked everyday and couldnt afford gas. He lived 30km away.

traveling will always be political. its so easy for me with an eu passport to get a visa for indonesia. but when my fam from indonesia want to go to the eu, it takes months of preparation to get the right papers

My daughter was in hospital in Bali recently and the nurse asked her how she afforded to travel. When my daughter said that she worked and saved up, the nurse said that despite having studied for 4 years to become a qualified nurse she only earnt 90p an hour and would never be able to afford to travel.
It really does make you realise how privileged we are.

I don’t get people in the comments saying “it’s economical, not political” bruhhh why do you think people can’t afford basic needs in the first place? Who affects prices, wages, healthcare, housing, taxes, education, fuel, public transport, imports, labor laws, subsidies, etc? Government policies. Politics literally shapes the economy people live in. People suffer economically because of political decisions!!! That’s why it IS political ffs😭

Travelling really does show you the privilege you don’t always realise you have. Things that are normal everyday life to us are a dream situation for some

Domestic flights in Indonesia are often more expensive than international ones 😭 some people even book flights with a layover in Singapore or KL just to get cheaper tickets to Sumatra or Kalimantan 😭

I asked my easyrider in Vietnam if he could travel anywhere in the world without having to worry about money where he would travel to. He said 'just Vietnam'. he said he loves Vietnam so much he wishes he could travel across his own country. when I left the loop for the next stop, he mssgd me asking where I was then. I said Sapa. he said he really wished to go there someday and had heard it was very beautiful 💔 really broke my heart a bit cause Sapa isn't even very far from Ha Giang (at least, obviously from my perspective) so Sapa seeming so unreachable or at least difficult for him to travel to was pretty sobering 😢

Indonesia is a great example for this. I booked a tour in yogyakarta that turned out to be a private driver tour and i was saddened at how hard the company was making him work. he had shown me that the company would tell him at 7pm about his obligations the next day and when he was with me he found out he had to wake up at 2am for a sunrise tour and 8 hour drive.

I'm 27 and my mom 63, it's our first time riding a plane in a domestic flight to have a vacation. I'm just so lucky enough to have a job that pays 10$ an hour, it's really big amount in our country PH.
So when we have a tours we always tip the tour guides and drivers and invite them to eat with us, they are really greatful cuz sometimes lot of tourist don't invite them to eat and give tips cuz we know how little they get paid.
I'm a dev, so I'm solely working on an app that directly hires them so that they get paid directly too and not scraps from the companies that hires them
