@joshfromreright: "School refusal" — the phrase alone puts the weight on the child. Like they're choosing difficulty. Like a bit more pressure might fix it. 💙 But for many autistic children, what's happening is emotionally based school avoidance — EBSA. Something about the school environment feels overwhelming, unsafe, or threatening to their nervous system. So we see panic, shutdowns, tears, physical symptoms. And then later in the day, they seem okay again. Not because it wasn't real. Because the threat has passed and their nervous system has settled. The part that often goes wrong is what happens next. When EBSA gets treated as defiance or naughtiness, the response tends to be more pressure. But more pressure doesn't resolve a threat response — it intensifies it. You genuinely cannot discipline a child out of survival mode. What actually helps looks different. It starts with reducing the threat enough that safety becomes possible again. Because a child who feels safe can learn. A child in survival mode cannot. That's not a discipline problem. It's a nervous system one — and it deserves to be understood that way. 🧡 #SchoolAvoidance #EBSA #AutisticChildren #Neurodiversity #NeurodivergentSupport

I tell my son all he has to do is call me and I’ll be there. He missed a lot of school at first, but just knowing he could leave whenever he needed made him able to go consistently after a few weeks

My daughter struggles with this. I’ve never approached it with punishment. Mostly compassion and support. She did OT for sensory processing disorder, and that helped. Now it’s only coming in phases. I can’t really determine the trigger. She also struggles with some immune system issues so her attendance right is already a struggle. Her school admin reached out to say we need to have a meeting about her attendance, so I’m kind of dreading that. Really don’t want to put more pressure on her because I know it will only make it worse. We are moving in the right direction, slow progression, but still probably not fast enough for the school district.

Autistic or otherwise neurodivergent. This is what I’ve been trying to get my kid’s school to understand.

I and my sister experienced this and then I had a daughter who experienced this as soon as school started. My mom was taken to court for truency for the last 4 years of my school until I was eventually a candidate for “correspondence school”. She’s homeschooled now after cptsd and autism were diagnosed and attends a local school as a partially enrolled student.

My daughter is not autistic (apparently, based on testing...), but this exact pattern is an issue for her. Her nervous system isn't handling school well; she has chronic migraines and other nervous system issues. It's really tough to navigate. Her therapists say she needs to not avoid school because it makes the anxiety worse, but I see that she's struggling with the sensory input and social interactions.

My youngest is bored she wanted to go and I can’t find a suitable school who will allow me to attend. She needs the regulation and it’s a huge issue for our family

My son was in second grade, and his therapist told me to take his video game away from him at home and I told him I won’t do that because I’m not gonna make his home life as miserable as his school life

My daughter is waiting on the assessment process for autism. School know this as they were the ones who recommended doing the referral. But school are the ones causing her all her problems and making her not want to go to school. School mornings are very difficult.

Yeah, I’m dealing with this right now with my 13-year-old. I am communicating with the school. I’m trying to help him and get supports and their idea was hey let’s put him in a room with seven adults and tell him if he doesn’t come to school he’s gonna have to go and face a judge. and then they ask how can we help you? What is it that you need and he just sits there with tears growing up in his eyes going I don’t know. I just can’t wrap my head around having someone over a special education program and someone being an IEP file handler not comprehending this. I left the meeting thinking thanks you’ve made this worse. I’ve been advocating on helping him learn long-term sustainable skills to manage this and they’re like nope you must use fear and escalation. Because we said so.
