jetzt definitely a smart move to disable SSH in the firewall while you are connected to the server using SSH. also you are describing CentOS and Fedora server commands. this will not work for any other Linux server.

Personally I would also add to set password logins to no in the sshd_config, and switch to proper ssh keys instead. Just adds another security layer.
