The playbook has changed. I would be fine with renting if I knew how I would fund a roof over my head when I’m old. The issue is the cost of living in 30+ year time, which we obviously do not know. So if someone can provide a solution to that, that would be fab, I may take renting more seriously. Also being able to rent without the fear of you being booted out of your rented home. Finally, past performance of the stock market is absolutely not an indicator of future performance, so when the 7% performance is touted, that actually does not provide a lot of comfort. But it’s what we have I guess.

.. you’ve also advised that owning your own home and being mortgage free in your retirement is a game changer, compared with paying rent in your retirement. This is a key fact that should always be included in the rent vs buy debate..( in my opinion)..

Absolutely. There is nothing wrong with renting and at certain times in life it can provide the flexibility that is needed at the time. Now unable to sell my 1 bedroom (due to slow market), I wish I had rented longer and moved directly to a family home once I was ready to have one.
