We made a balloon-powered car—a fun, hands-on way to explore STEM and Newton’s Third Law of Motion! Try this with your child and watch them build, test, and launch their own invention! Materials we used: •	Cardboard •	Ruler •	Scissors •	Drinking straws (3 total) •	Tape •	Party balloon •	Wooden skewers •	Plastic caps (from milk jugs or water bottles) •	Hot glue gun (optional, for securing wheels) How we made it: 1.	Cut a piece of cardboard into a 3x6 inch rectangle (this is your car base). 2.	Trim 2 straws to 3 inches and tape them underneath the car base—these hold the axles. 3.	Fit a balloon over one end of a third straw. Tape it tightly so no air escapes. 4.	Tape the balloon-straw combo lengthwise on top of the car. 5.	Slide wooden skewers through the 3-inch straws underneath—these are the axles. 6.	Poke plastic caps onto the ends of the skewers to make wheels. Use hot glue if needed. 7.	Blow up the balloon, pinch the straw, place the car on a flat surface… and let it go! STEM concepts: This activity demonstrates Newton’s Third Law of Motion: for every action, there’s an equal and opposite reaction. Air rushes out of the balloon and pushes the car forward—simple physics in action! Try it at home and let us know how far your car goes! Which part looks like the most fun?
