I shouldn't be saying this: in a trial of 313 people with shoulder pain, a common surgery did no better than a placebo operation. Not backed by evidence. Here's the truth: 🦴 313 people with subacromial shoulder pain at 32 UK hospitals were randomly assigned to decompression surgery, arthroscopy only (a placebo, with no bone or soft tissue removed) or no treatment. 📊 At 6 months, mean Oxford Shoulder Scores were 32.7 for decompression vs 34.2 for arthroscopy only, no significant difference. 🩹 Both surgical groups did slightly better than no treatment, but the gap wasn't clinically important. The real risk is paying for the part that didn't add anything. The authors say the edge over no treatment might come from a placebo effect or postoperative physiotherapy. Surgical decisions belong with your care team. Beard and colleagues ran CSAW, a multicentre, pragmatic, placebo-controlled, three-group randomised surgical trial with 51 surgeons. Participants had subacromial pain for at least 3 months with intact rotator cuff tendons and had already tried exercise therapy and at least one steroid injection. Patients in the surgical groups weren't told which operation they received. The mean difference between the two surgical groups was -1.3 points (P = 0.3141). There were six study-related complications, all frozen shoulders. Read the study (Beard et al., Lancet, 2018): https://doi.org/10.1016/S0140-6736(17)32457-1 Free full text: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5803129/ Find a study that fits you and indicate your interest at corterve.com.
