in the 2033 book Artyom by chance ended up in his childhood apartment to hide from the gouls i believe, in there he picked up a book to read and a photo fell of him and his mother, bro then started crying because at that point he was ready to give up, ready to lose any shred of hope he had left to save the metro. Him remembering his mothers face solidified his ambition to push foward.
