The gang was already a bunch of killers before 1899, they were a gang of robbers and were wanted for years. Hosea started to recognize the consequences of their actions too late. Yeah, he had some foresight on Dutch's mental health earlier but to say that the gang "turned into a bunch of killers" as if they weren't already seems somewhat wrong on his part and for the record, I consider him the wisest member as most would.
