Once had a prof who I considered the best I ever had, finished their class with a 98%, met with them individually weekly (when I could), always asked questions, came to office hours, etc. When it came down to asking for a letter of rec she refused because my attendance in her class hadn't met her standards... I missed 4 classes because I had cancer and was basically living at the hospital that semester, lol.

Does it look bad if the student doesn’t waive the right to view the letter? I always waive my right because I think its the right thing to do, but I’m nosey and always wonder what they wrote 😂

I had a professor tell me, “Grad school isn’t for everyone. You should just get a job.” when she refused to write me a letter. Now I’m halfway through my masters, am working on novel research in my field, and have a 3.9 GPA. In her defense, I get a C in one of my last classes I took with her (but did better or significantly better in other courses I took from her). I’d been going through a breakup during that semester and was having a rough time of it. So, I do get it, but also jeez lol

I only asked professors who knew me well for LORs! I feel like it’s a waste of time asking professors who don’t know you that much for one, and would create a disadvantage on my application

I have a question. I am applying for PsyD programs next year and I was wondering if I could approach one of my English professors. I have a minor in English and have worked as a research assistant for him for 2 years. Even though I am a psych student and he is an English professor could he write me a letter of recommendation or should I only approach my psych professors? PS I really love your content 🥰

I had a professor (Chemical Physics) that always gave me the impression that he thought poorly of me. Then one day, my advisor hinted that he bragged to the Chem department that I was “one of the best P Chem students we’ve ever had.” I was so shocked to hear this, so I went to him for a LoR. He was like “with the greatest pleasure!” I still have no idea what convinced him that I was that caliper of student. lol.

would they say no to a student who rarely attends class due to chronic health issues? i have a 504 and try to attend class when possible, but i’m always playing catch-up and haven’t really gotten the chance to form connections with teachers. i am a good student though-4.0gpa, advanced course work, etc

I had a prof from my community college who I had every semester I asked her to write a letter and would send emails with helpful information to help write letter she only responded once after everything was given over and she says “ oh sorry I missed the deadline, do hope you got in “

I’ve had to add overuse of AI. If I can tell that you’re relying on AI (I’m talking leaving the prompt in, using it for personal reflection, etc), then I’m not writing it. I also don’t write if you have consistently late work or lots of absences (obviously not if you’ve communicated and hard hardship, in fact in that case I’m more likely to write it).

Also, if you ask us to write you a LOR a week or sooner before the deadline for it!!! I’ve yet to refuse to write one, but not all profs will have the time or bandwidth to write something you request last minute. They also probably won’t be able to write the strongest letter for you either. It’s best to have this conversation in advance!

yeah I’ve only refused to write one letter due to my belief that they wouldn’t be successful in graduate school. It was hard but every single thing they did or said confirmed that for me
