My manager encourages us to wear headphones. She thinks it helps some of us focus better so that we don’t hear constant offer chatter. We can even play music out loud if we want to, on low of course.

Nowadays, most headphones allow you to adjust the level of ambient noise from attenuation to full transparency. Some can even distinguish between nearby sounds, allowing nearby speech to pass through, but blocking distant speech and other noise. So it's mostly a matter of personal attitude issues if using headphones is a problem.

As an Elise I agree with Elise. I also focus better with headphones even though I'm the only one in the office wearing them. (nobody cares that I wear them)

Being in office is extremely distracting- so many people think it's social hour and if I participate I get nothing done. Those of us that need to focus put the headphones on.

7 out of 10 times if I’m wearing headphones in public I’m not actually listening to anything. It’s a sensory shortcut to get my brain to focus.

unless wearing headphones in the workplace is a safety concern, why on earth would you care if the employee is getting their work done? I can't allow headphones because we work in construction around heavy equipment and you need to be able to hear what's around you, but if you're in an office, there is no reason not to allow them

I got that complaint once from management.. they said idd “you seem closed off and anti social..” my response was “good, mission accomplished. I’m not here to socialize but to do my job.”

"antisocial", as it's literally defined, rather than colloquially used, is actually the desire in a WORKPLACE. You're not supposed to be encouraging people chatting. It is absolutely a "bad visual" control issue.

As an autist person, this is literally me. When I worked at an office I needed my headphones and music to be able to focus. Now thankfully I work fully remote
