I am coworkers with several of my former students and even though they are adults, I have more of that proud teacher/mom relationship with them. Like I will be their mentor not their buddy.

I worked with 3 of my former high school teachers as a fully grown adult with children. They were very new teachers when I was in high school and I am 40 now. I CANNOT refer to them by their first names even though we are coworkers. Let alone be friends. Even the one I co-caught with in the same room for a year. They are still trusted and respected mentors.

I teach with a former teacher of mine. I’ve taught almost 20 years and have taught most of her children as well. I love her dearly, but I still can’t call her by her first name. 🤣

I have former students who are adults, peers, and I mentor and train to coach etc. We have a close relationship of sorts because we know each others families and have been in each others lives for over a decade in some way, etc. At the same time, they still dont use my first name lol and I'm not ever confiding anything personal that isn't work related. We can hang and have shared interests and care about each other, but there's always that boundary because once upon a time I was their teacher, and those boundaries were set way back then too. so they just continue even though they are almost 30 now

One of my colleagues was just a bridesmaid for a former student’s wedding. (Both bride and groom were former HS students of hers). Colleague tells me the wedding was “filled with former students, it was great!” whereas I see that type of event as my worst nightmare! 😭

we’re friends with our colleagues even if we had them as teachers but there is generally always a line that we uphold—they are in more of a mentoring position in my life. I look up to that teacher

One of my HS teachers is best friends with a former student and even went on family vacations with them WHILE teaching said student. I’ve been in education for 10 years and I’ve kept in touch with former students but they legit still call me “miss” and see me as the once teacher

Yeah I agree it can be a bit weird. The most I would go is a good mentorship or acquaintances if we’re coworkers but it wouldn’t go any further than that.

Idk if they’re now coworkers and both adults that feels different.

I get your point and there is a line. However kids do grow up and if you have kept that separate. I don’t see an issue with a 50 year old being close to a late 20 early 30 year old. They are an adult. They are not a child. Key point is that that student teacher boundary was never crossed when they were a minor.
