I do this with terra cotta pots/lids, and was able to get my worms from petsmart! They’ve kept my tomato and pepper beds fed so well that I didn’t have to fertilize them at all last year.

Neem oil in a wash spray bottle will deter most insects not done at high sun. Peppermint oil will also work on the soil

I'm doing wire compost bins in my garden beds. I added lots of plant clippings and leaves to my front garden bed in the fall and I swear it has worms now and they are working on improving the dirt.
