@afunnymom: Is this a hot take??? I consider myself a professional introducer, cause I don’t need the praise! I need you to meet my genius Deaf client and make connections with them, not me!

If I get a comment saying “you did such a great job up there!” I like to say “isn’t Accessibility beautiful!?”

Sometimes my clients don’t want to be outed, they want to remain anonymous. I tend to let them make themselves known. So if I get thanked or complemented and I am not near my client (and therefore not obvious who they are), I will say “thank you. I love providing access, and I am grateful to this organization for providing that access so everyone can have a voice.

I think it depends on rapport with the client. Also there have been several events where I was interpreting as general access in case someone Deaf showed up. So I didn’t always have someone to even introduce them to 😅.

It’s definitely good to set up a response to that scenario before it happens, if possible! I once interpreted for a client at a conference who told me they did not want to be outed as someone who used interpreters. They ended up sitting a few rows back from me, but we were able to establish a system that worked for us.

I wish I had the knowledge or the assertiveness to approach to two terps (we all have known each other professionally and personally) after Sal Vulcano the comedian asked both of them to go on the stage to do a skit with them… they did not acknowledge me in the audience… that was heartbreaking. After the show, they both went, “Oh, shoot! I should have brought you up on the stage” and “Yes! I should have introduced you to him because we are here for you.” 🥺😑😩. Thank you for this video. I appreciate you. 🤟

I don't do that because, as others have said, some clients don't want that. If I have that interaction, I interpret the dialogue to the consumer and look to them to see if they want to respond. Two scenarios, A) They do and I introduce the consumer and let them take it from there B) They don't and I say something along the lines of, "Of course, thank YOU and (insert name here) for providing interpretation services as not everyone is as committed to ongoing accessibility for the Deaf/HOH community.' I would never tell someone to find my consumer without express consent to do so. I often find it better to segue the conversation about the importance of ASL access, in situations where there aren't Deaf folks present. Cause, in the way you're describing this situation you are still making a decision for the consumer.
