being intellectual is just about staying curious, so many people don’t even realize it.

I agree. If I wasn't curious I would never discover how bad of a writer Brandon Sanderson is.

i’m so glad you’re talking about this. the “intellectual classics” aren’t everyone’s cup of tea. it’s just about how you interact with what you read rather than the book itself

No because there is a massive issue with intellectual superiority in the book community. Good books ≠ Intellectual books

i feel like everyone just wants to ‘consume’ nowadays for the sake of fitting into a certain narrative, i wish ppl would stay curious and lean into things that they’re truly interested in

Reading is intellectual, my family used to look down on me for reading manga but it helped me regulate my mood, balance my anxiety and I learned a lot of random stuff; it became a gateway for loving all sorts of books including non fiction. I don’t understand why people want to put down other people‘s reading when most people in our society don’t read anything at all and that’s sad.

AI has affected my critical thinking so much, so to challenge my brain, I’ve been exploring different genres and themes in books. I think reading something that I’m not used to helps me train my brain much more.

people are always shocked when i say i enjoy reality tv despite the fact i read "high-brow" literature like its actually really fascinating from sociology standpoints but its ok if people watch them too just for fun! who cares what other people do

people on social media act like intellectual curiosity is a checklist where you HAVE to read a set list of books, watch a set list of movies, etc. instead of a mindset

Reading shouldn’t have to feel like you’re punishing yourself! Read what you love

As long as we read, exercise the faculty of our critical thinking skills and stay curious and empathetic with an open mind, I think we are pretty intelligent.

The opposite of curious is exclusion. Keep bringing more people and more viewpoints into your tent. Happy to be here.

Anyway Malissa, if you’re really interested about the history of 60s/70s gothic romance paperback i think you should read The Gothic Romance Wave: A Critical History of the Mass Market Novels, 1960-1993 by Lori A.Paige. it might be the one and only nonfic book that pertains to them

OMG YES, I went for a full rant the other day when I saw about 5 videos of book recommendations to be considered intellectual/erudite. As the person with major in linguistics, if you want to be considered one it’s enough to google a list of “foundational” literature like religious texts, myths, first books of certain countries/cultures to get the understanding from where modern literature concepts came from.

How do you read so many books with such a busy life? I also struggle with concentration. Need some tips.
