Merc tech here; very common issue on the A35 is either cyl 2 or 3 exhaust valves and seats like to burn and not seal - I’m assuming you’ve done the usual checks for compression and such. Failing that, the injectors are known to go as well. I doubt I’ll have been much help but wanted to throw my hat in 😅
