Things appear deterministic at the classical reality level, but at the quantum level, it is probabilistic which means free will is possible. The question is then about whether consciousness is a quantum or classical phenomenon, and both sides have supporters and opponents from prominent scientists. If you have done extensive meditation before, you may get a sense that the answer is that free will is not deterministic. There is a much deeper layer to consciousness when one is in deep meditative state. The conditioned or deterministic mind which is our ego that is indeed influenced by the environment and other factors fades away in that state.

Free will simply means you have the freedom to do as you please, this is not in conflict with your brain subconsiously making desicions for you, because at the end of the day its still you making these decisions

if you asked me, we are governed by forces and free will is an illusion, you still make choices and have a "will" it's just not completely random or up to you. we make decisions everyday and these are created by environment and material conditions, but these materials conditions are shaped by how we interact with the world and they are themselves subjective/probabilistic. its all a big feedback loop.
