Adal, led by Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Ghazi, invaded with support from the Ottoman Empire, which supplied firearms and aid. This brought early victories and heavy destruction, but no lasting control over Ethiopia. Ethiopia later received help from Portugal, including troops led by Cristóvão da Gama.
