@adytum_official: Researchers at the University of Utah published this in Molecular Psychiatry in September 2025. They found two different types of microglia, which are immune cells inside your brain, that have opposite effects on anxiety. One type suppresses anxiety and the other type promotes it. Basically a built in brake and accelerator fighting each other. The reason this is a big deal is because every anxiety medication on the market targets neurons. Not immune cells. So if this research holds up, it could explain why some people never really respond to treatment. Their neurons were never the problem. Worth noting this was done in mice and human trials are still years away. But the implications are huge. Source: Van Deren et al. Hear me out - then it may also have a connection with inflammation, like most autoimmune diseases.

I’ve been saying this since I was a kid. I say I’m anxious people go “Oh no what are you worrying about?” I’m NOT WORRIED. I’m ANXIOUS. For no reason at all, my heart is racing, my stomach hurts, I’m sweating bullets, and pacing the room, it’s in my BODY not my head. I’ve had doctors argue with ME about MY SYMPTOMS over this, at this point I can’t even explain how mad it makes me

I always feel like my anxiety is body first THEN my mind. My body goes into fight or flight first and then my thoughts follow, spiraling. I fully believe this.

As someone who was forced in mental health routes for over 20 years, I finally had a psychiatrist that listened. I told her my anxiety was a precursor to thoughts and that I had surges coming from my lower belly and a freezing sensation causing fear before anxious thinking started. Fast forward to after getting the GeneSight (genetic) test that same day - I got diagnosed with real conditions POTS, EDS, MCAS, and gastroparesis after researching conditions that cause body anxiety, not thought anxiety. Anxiety is the warning system of your body.

Because anxiety is a symptom, not a diagnosis.

I have always known my anxiety doesn’t come from my mind. I’ve described it to my doctor as body led anxiety and it fluctuates with my auto immune condition but also with hydration levels and other things! I’m so sick of trying to get help because most doctors think it’s psychological and it’s just not.

As someone with anxiety I laughed at this because truly this makes a lot of sense. When you touch something you’re allergic to you get hives. When you have a peak in triggers/stress/trauma your anxiety peaks. Many people with anxiety have co morbidities that are autoimmune related - for unknown reasons that make diagnosis hard. If it is immune related this could potentially be the tipping point for anxiety to be less overlooked for future generations, but I hope that if true treatment will be possible for those currently experiencing anxiety

I wonder about the correlation between anxiety, immune disorders such as allergies, and maybe even IBS and other digestive issue.

My anxiety starts in my stomach. I’ve always explained this , but people reduce it to something happening in the brain. For me, it feels in my gut, my microbiota.

This makes sense to me. My anxiety is much worse when I’m in between treatments for my autoimmune disease.

I would believe it, because I feel so sick whenever my anxiety stays high. Like sometimes I’ll even run a low grade fever.
