@allthefeelstherapy: As a couples therapist, this is one of the biggest misconceptions I see: Opening a relationship doesn’t create problems. It exposes existing patterns around trust, communication, and emotional safety. ENM doesn’t skip the foundational work- it makes it unavoidable. Open relationship truths people don’t expect Part 1. Follow for more. Educational only, not therapy. Not applicable to abuse dynamics. #ethicalnonmonogamy #consensualnonmonogamy #openrelationships #polyamory #couplestherapy
Oh I disagree, opening up your relationship can 100% create new problems. Adding any new major dynamic to a relationship would.

Most people don’t realize this until they’re already in it.

I've been with my gf for 10y now and we've opened our relationship 3y into it, it helped us so much with developing honesty, communication and trust, our relationship is incredibly healthy and strong now and it's mostly thanks to that

I definitely struggle with communication… privacy is my comfort zone. I may not be hiding anything but I struggle when people want to know what I’m doing. And I do that in monogamous relationships I think open would make it even more difficult.

This is it. Have been in an open relationship for many years. Any person who comes to me looking for a solution to their relationship issues has already misunderstood the brief

100% for all types of ENM. The benefit is that people taking this path generally decide to conscientiously approach. No excuse for being passive or avoidant in this lifestyle.

Ooooh I love this. As someone who’s been practicing polyamory for years, this is EXACTLY what I tell any monogamous friends who come to me about opening up their relationship

My experience with ENM:
Get a qualified (in ENM) therapist before you begin. It will be worth it trust me. She's right, all sorts of issues in the relationship will be exposed. Money well spent to see that therapist weekly for the first few months, maybe longer. You won't regret it.

At that point how can you possibly have emotional safety if the love of your life wants to run around on you? Very unrealistic position.

my partner who always was adamant he didnt want kids is suddenly coparenting with enthusiasm after being with a new partner for almost a year. I am still very happy to be child free - but now I'm suddenly in a relationship with someone who isnt and it's a LOT.
