The reason luffy spams gear 5 is because it is a new transformation therefore he needs to train with so his stamina increases, like with gear 3, when luffy used gear 3 for the first time it made him lose his elasticity so he trained it enough for it to not do that. That is why luffy is spamming gear 5, so he wont turn into a grandpa after every use.
