@farmherdawn: This is one of the many reasons I switched. They are a little higher maintenance than cattle, but worth it imo! #sheepfarming #cattlefarming #homesteading #minifarm #hobbyfarm

so you expect an average of 3 lambs per ewe per year??? I see 1.5-2 with producers near me. if you are just talking max potential I have a cow that has twins every year so bump your calf number up.

You're probably not going to have that many lambs.

We are keeping our cows but added sheep to the farm about a month ago! I’m really excited to see how it goes!

We swapped this year from cattle to sheep for the same reason!
what's the difference in death rate? how long is a ewe in production?

Just bought a large flock myself. The thing I like is if you lose a lamb or sheep it nowhere near as big a hit financially and the risk is a lot shorter term than cattle

your math doesn't seem to be matching. 5 ewes, over 2 years isn't 30 lambs. they arent all going to have trips. you are also talking more animals, more vaccines, more vet bills, shearing, and more chance at mortality. when you factor all of that in are they still more profitable?

You’re not counting the headache factor. Sheep are born without the will to live 😂 they destroy pasture land, hard to keep in a fence, usually end up with a few bottle ewes per year. It’s just less headache and not worth the difference in my opinion
