Zyhir Hope has one of my favorite swings that we’ve looked at recently. He does an excellent job with vision, sliding his pelvis forward during the stride phase, rotating his hips away from his chest, and the bat speed and power are electric. One thing evaluators have questioned is how the swing will consistently handle elite velocity at the top of the zone. What’s interesting is I really don’t think the issue is mechanical. This swing is excellent. There honestly is not a single thing that I would change mechanically, and there really aren’t any glaring holes in the movement pattern itself. If I were working with Hope, I’d attack this more through approach rather than swing changes because he is already such a high-level hitter. One thing hitters need to understand is that when you are trying to attack the bottom two-thirds of the strike zone, you usually do not also want to swing at pitches at the very top of the zone. The opposite is true as well. If you’re hunting pitches up, you really don’t want to be swinging at pitches down. I’d recommend Hope simply become more intentional about what pitch he’s looking for. If he’s facing a pitcher with a good four-seam fastball and he knows they’re going to attack him at the top of the zone, then he needs to prepare for that pitch up and fight to stay above it. And when I say stay above it, I literally mean aiming one, two, or even three baseballs higher than where you think you should. This is one of the biggest keys to being able to consistently hammer elite velocity at the top of the strike zone. If you want help improving your swing mechanics, timing, pitch approach, or overall hitting performance, check out our remote hitting training program on our website.
