The incident has resulted in one confirmed fatality and leaves four personnel missing, triggering an intensive emergency search and rescue operation. Out of 115 crew members on board, 110 people were successfully rescued. The rig experienced a sudden "punch-through" event while conducting preload jacking operations. A punch-through occurs when one of the rig's massive legs unexpectedly breaks through a hard upper crust of seabed sediment into soft mud below, instantly throwing the rig off-balance. The rapid tilt caused a catastrophic loss of stability, causing the entire structure to sink. The 2014-built Friede & Goldman high-specification jack-up rig was contracted by BW Energy to support drilling operations at the Dussafu license. It had not yet commenced drilling. While production at the nearby MaBoMo wellhead facility was temporarily halted as a safety precaution, authorities report no material damage to the facility or any accidental discharge of oil or harmful substances into the sea.
