@planetearth008: Dochula Pass is one of Bhutan’s most iconic mountain passes, sitting at about 3,100 meters (10,200 feet) on the road between Thimphu and Punakha. It’s less about the road itself and more about the feeling you get when you arrive—open sky, crisp mountain air, and a sweeping sense of stillness. The most striking feature is the 108 Druk Wangyal Chortens (stupas), arranged in layered circles across the hilltop. Built in memory of Bhutanese soldiers, they give the pass a quiet, sacred atmosphere. When mist rolls in—which it often does—the chortens emerge and disappear like something out of a dream. On clear days, Dochula offers a panoramic view of the eastern Himalayas, including some of Bhutan’s highest peaks like Gangkar Puensum, the world’s highest unclimbed mountain. The contrast between the bright white chortens and the snow-capped mountains in the distance is unforgettable. There’s also the Druk Wangyal Lhakhang (temple) nearby, unique for its modern murals that blend Bhutan’s traditions with contemporary history. Prayer flags flutter constantly in the wind, carrying mantras across the valley. In winter, the pass can be dusted with snow, making it even more magical. In summer, it’s often wrapped in clouds and mist, giving it a peaceful, almost mystical character. Dochula isn’t just a viewpoint—it feels like a place where Bhutan’s natural beauty and spiritual identity meet.
