I will never look at readybrek again 😳😳😳 A #proctogram certainly is an experience, but if it is something you have scheduled please don’t worry, your dignity is kept as good as it can be for the type of study it is. Reason I had one is because my bowels are incredibly slow, we’re talking once every two weeks if I am lucky! This study will see if there is anything surgically which can be done to try and improve things for me. When you arrive you’ll be explained the procedure and if female sign that you are not pregnant/believe you are pregnant. You then have three drinks to consume, one which is clear and has an aniseed flavour, and then two cups of barium which doesn’t have the worst taste but is strange in consistency. I found drinking through a straw was hopeful. You then change into two gowns, wearing one at the front and one at the back, and then you remove your lower clothes. Next a consultant will join the room, he’s the one who will be reviewing the x-rays as they are done, I believe it is also recorded (the x-rays not you) You are then laid down and tube is inserted into your rectum, and taped to hold into place. You hardly notice it entering, it’s soft tipped. Then barium mixed with readybrek is introduced into your butt, you are constantly asked if you are okay, if it’s uncomfortable etc, and it takes less than a minute. Following that you stand up and they prepare the x-ray to scan and the commode to be ready for you to park yourself onto. A screen is placed between you and the sonographers so it’s only the nurse supporting you who can see you in person. You sit down, forgot to mention this in the video but first you take deep breaths and cough a couple of times, and then once they’re ready you expel the solution. As you are sat down on a commode it’s easier than you think, and due to it’s consistency it helps it way out. Before you know it, you’ve emptied it all and the scan is done, sometimes they want to do an extra x-ray (in my instance of the small bowel) and then you are helped up by the nurse, given some wet and dry tissue to clean yourself and can put your clothes back on.
