@rcsouthwark: Fr Paschal Uche explains why Catholics do not believe in faith alone: “faith is the instrument, but grace plays the starring role. It’s grace that saves us” #catholiclife #catholicchurch

I’ve been Catholic for 57 years, and this may be the best explanation of grace I’ve ever heard. Well done

Thank you for saying this. I’m Methodist but my mother grew up catholic and the more I see from the Catholic Church recently the more I want to explore going back. Christianity is not about just believing, it is about showing Gods love.

If we define faith purely as an intellectual affirmation, then no faith alone cannot save us. But if we define faith as substantive, that it contains both the intellectual affirmation as well as its manifestation into reality. Then yes, faith alone saves. The author of Hebrews defines faith, explaining faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen. If faith contains evidence, then it is not merely the things unseen(mental affirmation). But rather the things unseen manifested into reality. What I mean is faith = trust in action. Cause trust without action isn’t trust at all. Hebrews 11 gives numerous examples so that the definition isn’t misunderstood. But my favorite is Abraham. Abraham went to the place God commanded in order to receive the inheritance. He believed/trusted God, so he went. If he didn’t go, then he wouldn’t have truly believed/trusted him. This depicts our spiritual journey. If we trust God, we begin walking the path. The at the end of the path, eternal life with the Father, the promised inheritance. God bless.

Paul in 1 Corinthians 13 is not discussing how we are justified, but describing that true Christian faith is never empty of love. Salvation is by faith alone in Christ (Romans 1:17; Ephesians 2:8-9), but the faith that saves is never alone it produces love.
