Goose feathers were the gold standard for writing quills, but there was one problem. Each bird only produces 3–5 feathers suitable for writing found only at the tips of the wings. And each quill only lasted about a week. So Thomas Jefferson and others actually kept their own flocks just to maintain a steady supply of pens. Love this! Also: I just acquired two Brown Chinese geese because I needed sentries, but I don't know their gender... I think they both might be boys, but they're physical appearance and behavior is contradictory, but also no eggs...
