@theretirementnerds: The Most Accurate ROTH Conversion Strategy You’ve Never Been Taught #retirementplanning #socialsecurity #retirement #strategy #fyp
What if I have $4,000,000 in my 401k, and $2,000,000 in my trading account plus another $1,000,000 in the wife’s IRA. Shouldn’t I make conversions when I retire in two years at 60? My income will be cut in half.

Isn’t there a limit to how much you put in Roth per year? How can you put in 18000 in the example

Im planning to use the Roth Conversion for tax avoidance. The Conversions is taxed but continuing growth is not. I look at it as pay the 22% now rather than later so the growth isn't taxed.

I thought Roth contributions were maxed at under $10k or is that just a max before IRA contributions are required? Is there a Roth max post retirement? Is pre retirement under $10k/yr?

A dollar over while on ACA ( Obama care ) could cost me $36,000 this year.

As I approach retirement, 62 on Sunday 😁, as a super saver, 1.8M 401k, I've been researching the heck out of retirement spending strategies and this is the best thing I have ever heard

I thought Roths were already taxed. Why would you roll it over?

DubMan :
Would it be wise to rollover a traditional IRA to a 401k, then start converting parts of that 401k into ROTH, keeping current income thresholds into consideration? Also important to note: the IRA started as a pension rollover. Would that then make it a taxable event to roll that IRA into the 401k.

I'm not spending my money I'm spending the social security money first then I will spend my money and convert up to the 132,000 12% threshold with a married couple

I’m a super saver but my husband still thinks I’m a super spender. I went 100% in Roth (against the advice of my planner) once it was available. Lucky for me I was a company officer and forced the plan change to allow that option. I’ll never have an RMD but still cannot escape IRMAA once I’m 65.

This is an excellent perspective and one that I hadn't considered I have my retirement financial plan mapped out year by year until I'm 90. My strategy is to invest in my Roth 401k for the 3ish years while contributing the max to a Roth IRA and then convert from my Tradional IRA/401k between 66 to 69. But this strategy has controlling my spending during those years. I see your point

But what if I’m still working and I’m using the money that I’m making for my job to pay for things and I’m under 59 1/2 so I’m not gonna take the money out of my IRA

Some of that spent money is to pay the taxes for the money put into the Roth. 🤔

Excellent way to look at this. Yes, IRMAA is a bomb that actually determines how much you can convert, rather than being concerned about the income tax levels.

Only makes sense to convert if you are NOT using the IRA/401K monies to pay the taxes on withdrawal. RMD’s are minimal for somebody who has a $1.5 million portfolio at 73.(about 60K) direct direct Roth contributions are the best idea between your earning years or you could also use Roth ias a way to leave a legacy for your kids to tax free ..
